Sitting at the airport waiting for my flight to board makes me think about this first week of my news innovation and leadership program. Guys, there is hope! Hope for journalism to find sustainable digital business models.
You may have read that in 2020 I am part of the inaugural cohort of the Executive Program in News Innovation and Leadership at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY. During the year-long-program led by Anita Zielina and Jeff Jarvis, we explore how to transform the news industry and change our organizations by developing successful products and sustainable business models.
Our class is just amazing, with media leaders from so many different backgrounds. We are 15 participants from 10 countries, from companies like Bloomberg, Spiegel, Süddeutsche, Financial Times, Wall Street Journal, regional outlets and startups – and me for Neue Westfälische / Lokalportal. What unites us besides our challenges is our spirit. Spirit to drive change, no matter what.
At CUNY, great instructors provide us with the tools to do so. On the first day of classes, we discussed with Jeff Jarvis how bad the news business is doing. He truly encouraged us to think as radical as we can, since we were just in the beginning with the internet. He argued with Gutenberg, how long it took from inventing the press to build sustainable business models with the technology. With Elizabeth Hansen for example, we got deep in analyzing opportunity gaps and learning about strategy. In two days we explored different frameworks to develop and manage it. In addition, program director Anita Zielina opened our minds for a modern, empathetic style of leadership, wich is a main focus of the professional training.
Thank you so much for this opportunity. Let’s get some sh*t done this year! 🚀
